End of Year Wrap Up - 2019

As the year draws to a close, I want to thank you all for your ongoing support of ICON this year. It’s been another big year for your association.

Our local chapters have been really active over the past 12 months with over 43 events delivered in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore plus 2 pricing Masterclasses and a Next Step Series for junior members!

Singapore ICON

The momentous first ICON Asia conference in Singapore! A half day of learning and networking with the most popular sessions focused on future trends in sales, marketing and tech, managing and leading in the digital age, and how we must all adapt to survive in the new B2B landscape!

Launch of Thirsty Thursday Drinks to bring more casual networking opportunities to the market

Our most popular session of the year was How to get the most of proposal go/no go & debrief conversations - a shining example of our practical, tip-filled lunchtime toolkit sessions and providing even more valuable speakers through our partnership with APMP.

Hong Kong ICON

Our “Communicating in uncertain times” workshop was a very successful event in which we managed to strike a great balance between the challenging environment that we are currently facing in Hong Kong and delivering a value-add and insightful event. We are planning to do a “Communicating in uncertain times 2.0” event next year as the feedback was extremely positive!

The Dialogue Puzzle – How to engage and influence others really got our members talking about difficult dialogues and negotiations with leaders, colleagues and clients. Peter Nixon helped us learn how to create conversations that foster mutual understanding to turn those uncomfortable situations into wins!

The ABCs of Account Based Marketing was an event sharing practical tips on how to build your own ABM program that ties together sales and marketing! A hot topic for all currently

How driving digital transformation is like a marathon, not a sprint saw Ben Scott from Grant Thornton share his own multi-year journey dedicated to strategy and a long-term focus, to deliver significant digital change drawing similarities from his prior experience running ultra marathons.

Finished the year off with a festive networking event hosted by PwC bringing together members, suppliers and old colleagues.


Our event on developing brand passion was all about creating a journey of engagement with the customer – our members found Adam Carpenter’s presentation and straight forward tips on “keeping it real” refreshing – especially the gin everyone enjoyed afterwards!

Will Fuller answered all our questions around when is the right time to rebrand, with an insightful panel session including experts who had recently been on their own re-branding journey!

Fast tracked learning with conferences!

In 2019, our Forums remained as popular as ever, with the 6th Annual ICON Asia Conference being held in Singapore for the first time in June, the 3rd Annual Melbourne Forum in June and the 1st Annual Brisbane Forum in October! For a re-cap of the agendas please click on the links above.

2019 saw the revival of ‘Thirsty Thursdays’ series in the river city! We welcomed back some familiar faces and encouraged those new to professional services and B2B to head along to a wine evening and connect. Stay tuned for Wine Wednesdays in 2020!

Queensland hosted its first annual state forum: Mastering CX. This half day masterclass was a practical and hands-on session giving new tactics and techniques for over 50 attendees to execute and take back into their roles. It was followed by networking drinks at one of Brisbane’s newest (and coolest) venues, the boom boom room!

As part of expanding our thinking and inspiration, we welcomed a number of new perspective style speakers in our 2019 event line up. These included; Marc Orchard from BDO for startups who hosted a panel to discuss B2B business growth hacks from startups and side hustles, Kym Gorman delivered fresh trends from the USA’s Social Media World and Kylie Chown presented on nurturing new business through social selling, with a focus on LinkedIn.

A night of laughter (thanks to Trivia Master/ ICON WA committee member Paul Lemon), the ICON network pitched their wit against each other, all in the name of charity at our inaugural ICON WA Trivia Night, raising $1,000 for Helping Little Hands (HLH).

We then kept those feel good vibes going with our charity hackathon - where we helped four charities find their way forward to tackle specific strategic, marketing and communications challenges.

Our ongoing Mentoring program (that had two events, with a kick-off with Brant Garvey and a half-way check in) continued with great enthusiasm.


In June, the 3rd annual Melbourne Forum brought professional services and B2B colleagues together for a full day of learning and networking at Maddocks. The most popular sessions of the day were Stefan Grafe’s session on the psychology of trust and how to build it with clients, Cisco’s Wendy Anderson on why the customer experience is essential to business performance and the CMO panel session which saw some hot debate between senior marketing & BD leaders in some of Australia’s biggest firms.

Vivienne Corcoran brought us a thought providing event in October on establishing a Lifetime Client Listening program to marry what the business thinks it knows about clients and what clients actually think – a recipe for growth and client satisfaction!

To bring more learning and development opportunities to all chapters, 2019 saw ICON introduce a new webinar program - a brand new learning stream, that brings you access to an hour of training twice a month from the comfort of your desk! In 5 months we delivered 9 webinars on a variety of topics including Client Experience, Internal Communications, Transformational Change, Social Media, Leadership and Finding purpose at work. This program will continue into 2020, so please check out our webinar page for next year’s program!
