Our client is a truly global, tier-one law and consulting firm with an integrated partnership comprising over 500 partners across an extensive global network. They offer global breadth and local depth to their clients around the world. In Australia, the team advises on some of the largest and most complex cross-border matters domestically and regionally across Asia Pacific. Their client base includes leading financial institutions, corporations, regulators and governments.

Our client is seeking an ambitious, enthusiastic and motivated Business Development Manager to look after Perth and Western Australia, in addition to managing the Global Mining Sector, working with some of the world's top mining experts. You will have the opportunity to work in a high-performing, sophisticated and collaborative global team to drive innovative new business acquisition and client development activities.

Role responsibilities

  • New Business: Play both a lead advisory and a 'hands-on' role in coordinating and shaping proposals and credential statements, as well as supporting and advising on high value pursuits/opportunities.
  • Marketing/BD planning and execution: Play a lead role in developing and executing BD plans for the Perth practice and the global mining sector in Australia, Asia and across the globe.
  • Client Relationship Management: Assume "account manager" responsibility for a number of clients, as well working closely with partners, associates and BD colleagues globally in the management and development of strategic client relationships.
  • Opportunity spotting: Gather, interpret and utilise market research and intelligence to identify new client or market opportunities and work with the partners and the broader BD and communications team to develop and execute issues-based integrated marketing campaigns, particularly focused on developing a stronger external profile in key areas of law/sectors.
  • Cross-practice integration: Drive cooperation and interaction across the group to ensure a cohesive service offering. Utilise the firm’s partner and business development network to develop new opportunities and leverage innovative ideas from own practice area to others. Share ideas with colleagues in order to enhance quality of work and developing best practice for business development as a whole.
  • Client listening: Work on client listening programmes as appropriate; carrying out pitch debriefs, matter reviews or relationship reviews to inform our client and BD strategies.
  • BD tools: Responsible for the timeliness, consistency and quality of BD tools to support our the business' BD efforts eg. client and target lists, collateral, directory submissions, credentials, CVs, web copy, intranet etc.
  • Internal/External communications: Oversee the maintenance of a flow of market/client intelligence (e.g. pipeline deals, major players, market shares, key client contact moves and developments) to partners and associates. Liaise with the firm's external PR/communication firm for all PR and communication activity.
  • Mentoring and coaching: To partners and associates.
  • Additional projects: Be involved in firm wide, local, departmental or practice area projects.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Direct experience in a commercially focused BDM role. Experience within the professional services sector, particularly the legal sector, would be a significant advantage.
  • Significant exposure to the mining sector is essential.
  • Excellent impact and influencing skills.
  • A positive, proactive approach.
  • A commitment to quality, a high attention to detail and strong client focus.
  • Professional in outlook, attitude and appearance.
  • Ability to motivate, develop and inspire both team and fee-earners to deliver business goals and change behaviour where required.
  • Ability to work to deadlines, juggle multiple projects and deliver under pressure.
  • A willingness to go the 'extra mile' to achieve results.
