  Join us for our first Sydney in-person panel event of 2026!

  This panel explores how the steps to clear communication are changing in the age of artificial intelligence. Featuring insights from Plain English Foundation, we’ll examine how business professionals can harness AI tools like Copilot and ChatGPT to enhance content, streamline proofreading and maintain quality in client-facing and internal messaging. The discussion will also grapple with how human oversight can mitigate the risks of using AI-generated content so that the technology works for us not instead of us.

  Greg Moriarty
  Greg is the Foundation's Product and Quality Manager. He develops our training products and ensures their ongoing quality. He studied law and has completed the College of Law’s legal practice course. His extensive teaching experience includes plain English training for thousands of professionals in government agencies, banks and major law firms. Greg has presented at international plain language conferences and served as Secretary of PLAIN. His articles on plain language appear in Clarity, the Michigan Law Journal and The Mandarin. He is a member of the Standards Australia working group for the ISO standard on plain language.

  
  

  Elizabeth Beach

  Elizabeth is an accredited plain English editor and account manager at the Foundation. With a background in Psychology and Linguistics, she’s worked in universities, research labs, government agencies and a specialist medical college. For better or worse, she casts her plain English eye over almost everything she reads – whether at work or leisure. Her editing specialty is complex legal documents and convoluted procedure manuals for clients such as the Anti-Dumping Commission, the Professional Services Review Agency and NESA. She’s been a keen observer of AI tools as they’ve developed over the past couple of years and is keeping a close eye on what it means for the future of workplace writing.

  Rachel Bastow

  Rachel heads up our client solutions team at the Foundation. She is an experienced educator with more than 25 years in adult learning and professional development and has a degree in Russian and Italian. She has lived and taught in 5 countries and learned as many languages. An expert in our services, Rachel consults with clients to choose an ideal program for their communication needs. She then works closely with our client services and training teams to ensure a quality experience for our clients. Rachel has already helped hundreds of organisations on their path to clear communication and enjoys helping clients see where AI fits in.

  Christie-Lee Malek (she/her) is a Business Development Coordinator at Clifford Chance in Sydney, where she works closely with practice leaders to support client growth and strengthen the firm’s presence in the market. She moved into business development in 2025, following several years in senior practice support roles within Litigation & Dispute Resolution, where she developed skills in coordination, stakeholder engagement, and producing high-quality, client-focused materials. Christie-Lee is committed to fostering inclusion and is proud to be the co-founder and co-lead of Clifford Chance’s Pride Network in Australia.   The way clients find professional services firms has changed, often without firms realising it.

  Procurement teams, in-house counsel, and prospective clients are increasingly using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google’s AI-powered search experiences to research and shortlist firms. Long before someone fills out a contact form or visits a website, AI systems are already interpreting firm content and shaping the answers clients see, such as “Which firms in Australia specialise in complex regulatory advisory”, or “Firms with experience delivering large-scale digital transformation in government”.

  Whether your firm appears in those answers depends on how discoverable, structured, and interpretable your content is for Large Language Models. If your content is not designed to be understood by AI, your expertise will never enter the conversation, and you’ll never even know the opportunity was missed.

  In this session, Rory Grant, former law firm CMO at Gilbert + Tobin and now Chief Growth Officer at Squiz, and Julie Brettle, Chief Product Officer will unpack how AI-driven discovery is changing the way professional services are found, evaluated, and shortlisted.   Now Chief Growth Officer at Squiz, Rory partners with professional services firms, higher education institutions, and government agencies to implement digital experience platforms that drive engagement, unlock insight, and empower marketing and BD teams to move faster with less friction. He understands the pressures these teams face: doing more with less, proving ROI in real time, and adapting to AI-enabled workflows while maintaining the rigour clients expect.​

  Julie's thinking on AI and data strategy is backed by an RMIT Master's in Data Science Strategy and Leadership. With 18+ years across fintech, media, and technology, she brings a pragmatic lens to the hype - and a track record of translating complex problems into solutions that actually work.
